THE STORY BEHIND THE ALBUM

About

I didn’t really know what to say.

My father raised me with music. He didn’t just play the albums he loved; he played songs on the guitar, and he made me sing along. When he died three years ago, I started rediscovering that part of me. One year after his death, I got together with a group of friends and performed those songs in front of a live audience. It felt like a good way to celebrate him. But there were other songs, songs we never played together, that kept popping up in my mind. These were my songs.

I was afraid of writing an album, especially with this heavy a theme. I didn’t want to write ten ballads in a row talking about how awful it was that he was gone. But as time went on, my grief progressed through different stages and eventually settled on a mood that encompassed a much wider emotional spectrum. It started mixing with other memories, which presented themselves as new songs. What You Leave Behind is a snapshot of a turbulent period in my life which, for all its sadness, also gave me a voice.

LYRICS

Lonely Child

See the girl standing over there
She just escaped the electric chair
No one knows where she’s from
But she’s come a long, long way

She lives some place where the wild things are
She moves and smiles like a movie star
She’s got so much to do
But only so many hours in a day

And she’s such a lonely child
And on nights like these
When she’s running wild
Yeah she says she’s really sure
That she’ll find one day
What she’s looking for

A place like this will make her bored
She’ll need a man to feel adored
Then she’ll wait ’til
Something better comes along

She’ll move away to another town
It won’t be long ‘fore she’s back around
‘Cause she can’t do right
But she won’t do nothing wrong

‘Cause she’s such a lonely child
And on nights like these
When she’s running wild
Yeah she says she’s really sure
That she’ll find one day
What she’s looking for

‘Cause she’s such a lonely child
And on nights like these
When she’s running wild
Yeah she’s got me begging please
On nights like these
On nights like these

Only in America

There’s a man in Bisbee, Arizona
He told me that he lost his way
Wanted more from life than he was given
And moved out to L.A.
He rode straight into Beverly Hills
Got ready to unpack
And then he saw a million other people
So he just headed back

And I thought: only in America
Would so many feel the same
Only in America
Would they think it’s all a game

There’s a girl, she lives in New York City
And works down at the park
People say ‘Oh, she’s really pretty,
but transforms after dark.”
She’s got dreams, hopes of being famous
And dances on the stage
She’ll get stuck working there for wages
And never turn the page

And I thought: only in America
Is a nightmare still a dream
Only in America
Do they fear more than they seem
Only in America
Would they still pack up and go
Is it really all a show

There’s a boy, his intercontinental
Arrived here yesterday
And a girl waiting with a rental
To take him far away
They don’t care wherever they’re going
No cure for wanderlust
And she says: “Hey, if we’re never stopping,
Then nothing can stop us.”

And I say: only in America
Could a big life feel so small
Only in America
Could they live like that at all
Only in America
Could they do the things they do
Only in America
Could I meet someone like you

Knife

What should a man like me do
Holding a knife so sharp
It tends to cut both ways

It used to be protection
But now the angle’s wrong
And cuts me bad most days

And I’m not gonna let it anymore
I’m not gonna let it anymore

You know just how to wield it
You put your hands on mine
And fight me for the blade

So now it’s in between us
There’s no escaping from the
Mess this weapon made

But I’m not gonna let it anymore
I’m not gonna let it anymore

So go ahead and threaten
Point it at me the way
That I pointed at you

Yeah sure it hurts a little
But you and I both know
we loved the blood it drew

So I’m just gonna get a little more
I’m just gonna get a little more

In My Pocket

It’s been three years
And I’m as far away as I can be
I’m on a different continent
I’m far across the sea
I walked for miles and miles
But you’re always here with me
Same distance everywhere I go
‘Cause you’re in the air I breathe

On top of my hotel
From twelve floors high I see it all
The people going round and round
Life is circular and small
I said I’d come home soon
And I promised mom I’d call
But you and I are here together
Standing twelve floors tall

I carry you in my pocket
Along with sunshine
And a little bit of hope (4X)

When You Wish Upon A Star

When you wish upon a star
Do you hear my name?
Did you get what you wished for?
Does it feel the same?
Back then you said you wanted more
Now you got so far
And so there should be nothing left to wish for
When you wish upon a star

When you wish upon a star
Does it all come true?
And when you’re done with the wishing
What do you do?
Now everybody knows your name
And just who you are
Do you ever think about me these days
When you wish upon a star?

If you could go back, go all back
And just take back
Our time
Would you hold me
Just hold me
And we’d both feel
Just fine
We’d be different
Oh, so different
If they’d see us
Without scars
So I wish
That you’d wish
We’d remember
Who we are
When you wish upon a star (3X)

Last Kiss

I am so tired of never knowing when goodbye is
I never realised the last kiss would be right outside your door
And I’m afraid that I have given all my love
It’s such a shame it’s not enough
And I can’t share it anymore

I sit alone, writing songs to make the night
Seem more bearable without you
And yet I know that they won’t replace the light
That I saw when you were here
There’s nothing in the atmosphere that I can breathe
Without me thinking of you leaving
There’s nothing but a closing door
And I never wanted you more
I never wanted you more

There’s no time, no time, no time
There’s nothing left to say, there’s only yesterday
There’s no time, no time, no time
There’s nothing more than this, there’s just one last kiss

I count the days doing nothing much at all
While I’m waiting for your call, knowing it will never come
I sleep with shadows in my bed
And hear the voices in my head say
“What’s done is done.”

And there’s no time, no time, no time
There’s nothing left to say, there’s only yesterday
There’s no time, no time, no time
There’s nothing more than this, there’s just one last kiss

And you’ve gotta leave the light on
Just give me one more chance I’m begging you
Leave the light on
You showed me how to dance why won’t you just
Leave the light on
If you see me coming home I’m begging you
Leave the light on
I don’t want to be alone
So please come home

A Night Like This

Ain’t it strange how a summer
Turns your memories
Into wild shapes and colours
And a winter
Stays perfectly still

And it’s odd to discover
Such a symmetry
With your father and mother
But a sadness
That’s harder to kill

And on a night like this
When the world keeps spinning
So fast that it’s closing your doors
I can feel that you’re out there
And my life is beginning
To seem like the bookend of yours

“Now you are richer,”
Yes I remember
What you said to me that night
You referred to
A love I had lost

Those kind of words
Warm up December
And I knew that you were right
But I also
Now understand cost

And on a night like this
When the world keeps spinning
So fast that it’s closing your doors
I can feel that you’re out there
And my life is beginning
To seem like the bookend of yours

Give Me Your Heart

Give me your heart
And I will show it
All of the love
It’s meant to see
Then I will hope
That in the future
All of your love
Returns to me

Give me your trust
And I will guard it
Make sure the fire
Forever burns
Always depend
On your desire
This is how every
Lover learns

I know your life has taken
Heartbreaking twists and turns
All the bridges burned
But I know that your heart will awaken
If you just let me near
If you let me near so

Show me a smile
And say you’ll follow
Go take a chance
And cross the line
Take all my hope
And please be gentle
Holding this heavy heart of mine

Give me your heart
And I will show it
All of the love
It’s meant to see
Feed it enough
And you will grow it
This is how you and I
Will be

A Lazy Night in Brooklyn

It’s the same old walk on Banker’s Street
But the pavement underneath my feet
Seems colder
My reflection in the window glass
Seemed a little better in the past
I’m older

Of course, it’s you and me who change
All the while this city stays the same
Each year

And it’s lazy night in Brooklyn
It’s a lonely time without your trust
But the long way home is better all alone
And I’m sorry for all the things we lost
Yeah I’m sorry for all the things we lost

Oh, the bridge looks great this time of night
And I’m in the mood to see the heights
Without you
But the stories that the city holds
All end up being a story told
About you

And the memories of Prospect Park
Seem to linger longer after dark
Each year

And it’s a lazy night in Brooklyn
It’s a lonely time without your trust
But the long way home is better all alone
And I’m sorry for all the things we lost
Yeah I’m sorry for all the things we lost

Yeah it’s a lazy night in Brooklyn
And it’s a lonely time without your trust
But the long way home is better all alone
And I’m sorry for all the things we lost (4X)
